TrueWorld Technology at the 40th anniversary of Copa del Rey MAPFRE
40th edition of copa del rey de vela

The warm in Mediterranean Sea, with temperatures rising 20% faster than the global average.

The MAFRE King's Cup sets ambitious decarbonisation targets to achieve global goals within sport that can actively contribute to the sustainability of our seas.

Sailing and maritime sporting events are a vital part of addressing the climate crisis and its consequences on the ocean and supporting the protection and restoration of our seas.

The MAFRE King's Cup has relied on TWO's technology to calculate, record and offset its direct and indirect emissions, as it had done in previous years, and TWO has also created a decarbonisation strategy and real-time impact monitoring and traceability in Blockchain. Likewise, thanks to these measures, La Copa del Rey MAFRE is committed to achieving net zero by 2040 and a 50% reduction of greenhouse gases by 2030 to address the climate crisis in line with the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Strategic Sustainability Plan for Copa del Rey MAFFRE

To achieve these objectives, TWO has developed - in collaboration with the organisations Global Omnium and the certifier AENOR - a set of direct and indirect emissions compensation and mitigation actions to guarantee the success of the sustainability and decarbonisation strategy of La Copa. The actions follow the principles of the GHG Protocol and the ISO 14064 standard, which are embodied in specific, relevant and achievable objectives that ensure that the results of the actions are measurable.

1. Establishment of BMW's first oceanographic station

Thanks to the sponsorship of BMW, a pioneering company in sustainable mobility, the regatta has the first marine climate change station that allows real-time monitoring of relevant information from the Bay of Palma in order to analyse its impacts during the regatta.

Various monitoring instruments are implemented, including an autonomous air quality station and environmental sensors that collect data on pollutants, particles and CO2 emissions, as well as a meteorological data station.

It also incorporates a multi-parametric probe, acoustic recording equipment, a marine drone with probe, a robot for recording high detail images, a plotter for automated mapping, a cleaning robot and a trawl blanket for microplastic sampling. Our main technology partners are MAREXI Marine Technology, GPA Seabots and Ocean Observer.

This data will be analysed and transformed to understand the impacts of the regatta and the levels of anthropogenic pollution in the bay caused by the regatta, port activity, crews, dumping, sea warming, litter, land run-off and noise pollution.

This project includes the participation of the main Balearic organisations working on climate change, such as the Balearic Islands Coastal Observation and Forecasting System (SOCIB) and the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO), among others. This makes it possible to create an independent scientific report of great value.

2. Traceability of data through Blockchain and Key Performance Indicator tracking

The TWO dashboard is a powerful tool to monitor, analyse and visually display key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics. This data comes from satellites, IoT sensors, climate change station data and public data from SOCIB, AEMET and Copernicus, among others.

An important and key element of this year's regatta is the implementation of real-time Blockchain traceability with TrueWorld and Gate2Chain technology to collect valuable information on the environmental impacts of the Copa del Rey affecting the state of the ocean and the climate crisis. All information will be made available to the public and the scientific community through a public URL in a clear and transparent manner.

3. Carbon offsetting

We have implemented two different lines of action for the MAFRE King's Cup to mitigate impacts: direct and indirect emissions associated with the event, organisation and mandatory collaborators to achieve climate neutrality and other indirect emissions associated with the participation of the attendees.

- Direct Emissions derived from the organisation of the event

Direct emissions associated with RCNP's organisation, partners and facilities are offset by UN certified projects that reduce, avoid or remove greenhouse gas emissions from the atmosphere. The projects are implemented in developing countries and are rewarded with Certified Emission Reductions (CERs), a type of carbon offset measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent.

- Support for local marine conservation and regeneration projects: compensation or voluntary contribution

In this year's event, the MAFRE King's Cup increases the reach (scope) and the representation of more indirect impacts (i.e. attendees). TWO has set up a platform for those attending the event to give back to the local community - either by offsetting their footprint, making individual contributions or simply sharing local projects on their social media platforms to amplify and publicise their actions. This participation is voluntary and aims to amplify tangible actions that demonstrate the commitment of all stakeholders.

Marine conservation projects in the Balearic Sea will be supported by establishing partnerships with leading local foundations, such as the Marilles Foundation, Save The Med and Cleanwave Foundation, working on nature-based solutions for the protection and understanding of Mediterranean underwater forests and marine biodiversity.

4. Education and awareness-raising to drive positive climate action

Sports organisations and fans are being called upon to join a new climate action movement for sport that plays a crucial role in achieving global climate change goals. The Copa del Rey regatta teams have witnessed first-hand the problems of the Balearic Sea year after year and have the power to act by using the regatta as a platform to raise awareness and drive change for our sea.

  • The sailors and their teams are firmly committed to reducing their logistical and operational impacts. At the time of registration, they provide us with the data to calculate their carbon footprint.

  • The RCNP, host of the regatta, reinforces commitments related to waste management, raising awareness of ocean protection and monitoring the impacts related to the climate crisis and the health of the Mediterranean in real time.

  • Partners and suppliers share their passion and concern for the health of the sea and impact reduction by making use of recycling points and water recharging stations.

  • Raising awareness of all stakeholders through the creation of a good practice guide for visitors.

5. Strategic communication and reporting to advocate for climate action.

TWO has also developed a communication and dissemination strategy for the RCNP and the MAFRE King's Cup event to raise awareness of the values and environmental mission of the organisation, the regatta and the brand, as well as a reporting model.

Year 2017: the One Planet Summit is held in Paris - second anniversary of the Paris Agreement - 12 organizations that work in Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT - Blockchain) agree to collaborate and establish a global initiative, the Climate Chain Coalition is born. Two years later, more than 100 companies and institutions are part of this chain with a main objective: to drawdown climate change. Year 2020: TrueWorld Organization (TW) is established, an organization that monitors, in real time thanks to Blockchain technology, all the factors that affect the environment and climate change to make all the information available to society in an accessible and universal manner. TW joins the CCC to pool resources and knowledge and achieve solutions against climate change globally. The DLT system allows measuring, reporting and verifying the impact of all types of operations or processes and the mobilization of climate finance from diversified sources. The potential of Blockchain technology is key in the process of climate change action. It can improve the transparency, accountability and traceability of green gas house emissions as it can support companies and public entities in their process of providing and tracking data in an honest, standardized and accurate manner. The blockchain, unlike centralized networks, was designed to avoid monopoly control of the system. The technology records transactions in an open and permanent way, thus promoting transparency and security. Transactions are peer-to-peer thus eliminating intermediaries. Blockchain has different applications related to the fight against climate change. TW, in addition to the use of blockchain, gathers data and information through the use of smart sensor systems, which gives it the potential to automate and strengthen the monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) of the environmental impact projects. All of this results in an increase in trust among the actors involved in this type of projects. TW is committed to complying with the standards of truthfulness, transparency and innovation that the CCC has as principles, in addition to working under the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement.
